The 12 Questions You Need to Ask Your Lawyer
Get it Know Ed Murphy’s Background
Born in Indianapolis, Indiana, and raised just outside Zionsville when it was primarily a farming community, Ed Murphy is the eldest of three children. His father was a union carpenter who eventually became the owner of a garage door company, while his mother dedicated herself to raising their children as a stay-at-home wife and mother.
After graduating from Pike High School in Marion County, Indiana, Murphy attended Indiana University in Bloomington, where he earned his BS in Business Administration. He was then accepted into the Indiana University School of Law. During the first year of law school, he met Kathi Kowalski. They married at the end of Murphy’s second year of law school. With his own efforts funding his undergraduate degree and with Kathi’s support, they managed to pay for his law degree.
A Career of Service
While in law school, Murphy accepted an offer of a clerkship with Judge Norman Arterburn on the Supreme Court of Indiana. As a clerk, Murphy conducted research, attended arguments in the Indiana Supreme Court, wrote memorandums, and drafted initial opinions. He spent significant time researching what would become the Indiana Trial Rules, gaining invaluable experience in the process.
After completing his clerkship, Murphy became an associate of Livingston Dildine Haynie and Yoder. However, only two weeks after Ed started work there, Gil Haynie unexpectedly passed away, leading him to begin work in litigation. Initially, Murphy gained litigation experience in the family law arena but transitioned to general litigation. He developed a strong client base, including major insurance companies. Murphy also began defending healthcare providers such as hospitals, clinics, doctors, dentists, nurses, and other health care providers across northern Indiana and Ohio.
With extensive experience in major, multimillion-dollar cases, including obtaining million-dollar verdicts for his clients and defending cases with special damages exceeding several million dollars, Murphy has been frequently sought after by other attorneys for assistance on major cases. His dedication to helping people who have suffered major injuries has led to his recognition as one of the Best Attorney in America and a Super Lawyer for twenty-three years.
A Client-Centered Philosophy
Summarizing his approach to legal representation, Murphy says, “Good legal representation comes from having a competent, experienced, and qualified attorney who listens to the client, plans an approach to addressing the problem, and follows through in a timely manner to obtain the desired result.”
His partner Ed Foley shared his philosophy, saying “Every client is part of our family. It’s about more than just the legal outcome. It’s about the care we provide throughout the process.”
